We left for the Omo Forest Reserve this morning. We travelled the first two hours on a surfaced road and made good progress. When then hit very difficult dirt roads that slowed us down significantly. Once we entered the forest, we saw very many large trucks carrying logs out of the forest. These logs were from the forest plantations that have replaced much of the natural forest in this area.
Because of the bad roads, we didn't get into our camp until this afternoon. The camp is quite simple, but has three screened-in buildings and a small kitchen After getting set up in camp, we went for a short trek into the forest. Not far from the camp, we found elephant tracks and dung in a streamvery encouraging. Once we returned to camp, we heard calls from three monkey species. All of this means that we might have a good chance of locating a variety of animals in this area.
Tomorrow begins our field testing of the various equipment and collection methods we've developed for studying this forest. Hopefully we'll have some luck in finding animals and developing a sense of the wildlife that is here.
