Alligator River Wildfire

A wildlfire, likely caused by lightning, is burning on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern North Carolina. The Pains Bay Fire was first reported on Thursday, 5 May 2011. As of Wednesday night, 11 May, the fire had burned more than 22,000 acres of land. Many local roads have been closed, and air quality warnings have been issued for towns more than 200 miles to the east of the fire.
